Proof-of-Concept to Product Delivery

Sunrise was asked by BioWave® to take their electronic pain management system from proof-of-concept to product delivery. BioWave®’s technology uses electrical signals to provide pain relief by blocking the pain signal at the nerve inside the body, providing more and longer lasting pain relief than TENS and other electrical pain treatment options.

Bridging Clinical and Home Use

Originally a university research project, the BioWave® technology was seen as a promising treatment but the complex prototype was difficult to operate. In addition,  BioWave® needed two different devices to meet the needs of the home and clinical use cases. Sunrise Labs built the electronics and firmware to translate the therapy into two simple and reliable form factors.

The BioWavePRO is for use in a clinic, hospital, or sports setting, while the BioWaveHOME is for use by a patient at home. Sunrise was able to design both BioWave devices to be easy-to-use, inexpensive, and manufacturable while reusing components between the two devices to streamline the development process.

Sunrise also designed algorithms for BioWaveHOME to detect when a pad was too dry or had fallen off the skin.

Bringing Research to the Field

The BioWavePRO and BioWaveHOME devices are FDA-approved and have been widely adopted due to the effectiveness of the therapy. They have been used by over 105 professional sports teams in the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and MLS and by over 140 college sports teams. It has even been used by Drew Sunstein, Sunrise’s founder and Chairman of the Board, to recover from shoulder surgery.

In addition to athletic use, this effective treatment can be used in treating chronic pain and reducing prescription opioid use.
